What this column contains
One category string, the first that the listing declares. This is the one Google shows under the business name and the one that carries the most ranking weight.
Where the value comes from
Taken from the listing's own category assignment rather than inferred from the search you ran, so a row that turned up under 'restaurants' can honestly report itself as a bakery.
Example value
Bakery
What people use it for
- 01Segment one export into separate campaigns without re-running the scrape.
- 02Check search intent alignment: if most results for your target term declare a different primary category, you are bidding into the wrong vertical.
- 03Route leads to the rep who owns that vertical.
- 04Build a category mix report for a city before committing budget to it.
What it will not tell you
The category comes from a fixed Google taxonomy, and owners routinely pick a broader one than their actual trade to widen their reach.
Questions about this field
- Why does the primary category differ from my search term?
- Google surfaces listings for related terms, not just exact category matches. The column tells you what the listing actually claims to be, which is why it is worth filtering on after the fact.
- Can I filter a search to one primary category?
- Yes — export the run and filter this column. It is a plain string, so a spreadsheet filter or a WHERE clause is enough.
